Why consider Clinton County, Iowa?

Clinton County communitiies have taken the initiative to to provide incentives to encourage veterans and service members to apply for jobs, purchase/build homes and open businesses in our area. Some of these incentives include:

  • Reimbursement of expenses up to $275 per visit to interview with a business in Clinton County.
  • A one-time home purchase closing cost reimbursement of up to $1500 for a home located in Clinton County. (In addition to the $5000 Home Ownership Grant from the State of Iowa, see below.)
  • A first-year waiver of the Clinton County Business license fee for a veteran opening a business.

Why consider DeWitt?

The city of DeWitt has enlisted all of Clinton County's incentives. As well as:

  • Waiving family Fitness Center membership and family Aquatic Center membership fees for up o 12 months.
  • Any qualifying veteran constructing a home for his/her residence will have up to $1000 of their building permit fee waived.
  • Any qualifying veteran doing a home improvement project to his/her residence within 18 months of residence will have up to $500 of their home improvement permit fee waived.

How Iowa supports Veterans

Income Tax: This enacted legislation exempts federal retirement pay received for military service and survivor benefits from state individual income tax.

Injured Veterans Grant: This grant provides up to $10,000 to service members or discharged veterans who sustained serious or very serious combat-related injuries in a combat theater of operations after September 11, 2001. 

Home-Ownership Assistance: This $5000 grant is available to a service member who is buying a home in the state of Iowa. Members must have served on active duty on or after September 11, 2001 and purchased a home after March 10, 2005. Eligibility has been expanded to include service members who served 90 days of active duty between August 2, 1990 and April 6, 1991. 

State Employment: Veterans get five percentage points added to their grade or score attained in qualifying examinations for appointment to positions. Five additional percentage points are added to the grade or score if the veteran has a service-connected disability or is receiving compensation, disability benefits, or pension from the VA. Exclusions include promotions and appointments of chief of the police and chief of the fire department. 

Property Tax Exemption: The benfit reduces a veteran's assessed home value for property tax purposes by $1850. In order to qualify, a service member must have served on active duty during a period of war for a minimum of 18 months during peacetime.

Veteran Lifetime Hunting & Fishing License: Veterans who are Iowa state residents and have at least a 0% service-connected disability rating from the VA for a disabilty related to their military service can get a lifetime hunting or fishing license for $7.00.
